Itinearary

  • Welcome and Overview (5-10 min.)

Sanitation and general behavior rules in order to participate.
Hand washing is a vital part of sanitation.
Make sure hands are washed after touching hair, nose, eyes, or surfaces that are not clean.
Make sure coughing and sneezing are done with a turned head and in the “L-joint” of the arm.
There is no running, throwing material or food, or mishandling equipment.

  • Preparation for the “Experience” (10 min.)

Children are lined for hand washing and put on aprons and head coverings. Large groups
(over 20 participants) are divided into 3 smaller groups. These groups are cooperative assignment-groups of 5 children, independent assignment, and bakery tour.

  • Actual Experience Bakery Tour (10 min)

Involves a brief overview of what is expected of a baker. The tools an industrial baker uses compared to the tools of a home baker.

  • Cooperative Assignment (20 min)

Entails groups of five or six students following the directions as a team to mix and scoop or roll cookie dough, place onto a baking sheet, place sheet on rack to go in the oven. Place soiled bowls and utensils in predetermined area.

  • Independent Assignment (20 min)

Entails measuring the ingredients, packaging, labeling, and writing the directions for a dry mix of choice. The mix goes inside a bag that can later be used to give some of the freshly baked cookies away. This goes home with each participant.

  • Clean up (10 min)

Put aprons away, sweep and wipe tabletops. Briefly discuss keeping the kitchen free from rodents and insects.

  • Cookies and Juice (15 min)

In the café, our junior bakers savor their creations.

  • Future Outcomes Addressed

Our strong desire to bridge the gap between school, community, and family is what has sparked this program. Please feel free to let us know how we are doing.

  • Load on the bus for departure

Thank you for coming!
